Parent FAQ: Therapy Services for Children

How do I know if my child needs therapy?
If your child is experiencing emotional distress, behavioral changes, anxiety, or difficulty coping at home or school, therapy may help. A consultation can clarify whether therapy is the right fit.

What happens during a child therapy session?
Sessions are age-appropriate and engaging. Children may use art, play, storytelling, or conversation to explore feelings and build coping skills in a safe, supportive space.

What happens during a Creative Group session?

Creative Groups combine learning with hands-on creativity to help children better understand and retain mental wellness concepts. Research shows that when kids engage both their minds and their hands, they access higher-order thinking and store information more effectively.

Each session follows a consistent structure:

  • Welcome & Safety: Children co-create group norms to ensure a safe, respectful space where ideas stay within the room (confidentiality).

  • Grounding Exercise: A calming activity like meditation helps children settle in and prepare to learn.

  • Learning Module: A short, engaging lesson introduces the day’s topic—such as emotions, anxiety, or stress.

  • Creative Project: Children personalize a hands-on activity that reflects what they’ve learned, helping them internalize the concepts.

  • Take-Home Reminder: Each child leaves with a visual creation they can keep in their room or personal space as a reminder of their learning.

Whether in a group setting or a 1:1 session, this format ensures children gain meaningful skills and have a chance to express themselves creatively before heading home.

What types of therapy do you offer?
We use creative approaches like art therapy, narrative therapy, play-based techniques, and mindfulness to support emotional regulation, anxiety, and stress.

How are parents involved?
We believe in partnering with caregivers. Depending on your child’s needs, we offer regular updates, parent check-ins, and strategies to support your child at home.

How long does therapy last?
Therapy duration varies. Some children benefit from short-term support (6–12 sessions), while others may need longer-term care. Progress is reviewed regularly with families.

What should I tell my child before their first session?
Let them know they’re going to a safe space where they can talk, play, and explore their feelings with someone who understands kids. Keeping it positive helps ease nerves.

Do you offer group therapy?
Yes! Our Creative Groups for Grades 1–6 explore emotions, anxiety, and stress through art, storytelling, and community-building activities.

What are your fees? Do you accept insurance?
Jenny Robertson is our Master of Social Work Intern. She offers 50 minute counselling sessions for children ages 6-13 at the rate of $75.00. Any Creative Group past or present can also be booked at the rate of $150.00 and is 90 minutes in duration.

Services may be covered by extended health benefits or insurance under Social Work, depending on issuer. Receipts are provided for reimbursement.

Do you offer virtual sessions?
Both in-person and virtual sessions are offered for consultations. As the nature of therapy work with children is hands-on, child counselling sessions are only in-person at this time.
