Creating Calm Through Miniatures
A Mindful Start to the School Year
During the first PA Day of the school year, our group began the day with a calming, creative experience — building miniatures. This hands-on art form, practiced by people of all ages, offers a beautiful way to slow down, focus, and express mindfulness through art.
We started the morning with gentle grounding and mindfulness exercises, followed by a group reflection on sacred and comforting spaces. Participants shared memories of places and objects that bring them peace, then used these inspirations to craft their very own miniature “safe spaces” to take home.
Each child poured care and imagination into their creations — from cozy reading nooks to treasured family spaces. One participant even recreated a favorite corner of their grandmother’s barn! These miniatures now serve as visual reminders of calm and comfort, offering a personal tool to help children find their center whenever they need it.
The result? A morning filled with creativity, connection, and heartfelt stories. Children proudly shared their miniatures with one another — and couldn’t wait to show them off to their families at pick-up!
Looking back on Name it to Tame it
In the emotional regulation world, the idea is, if you can name the emotion, you can begin to tame it, or get control over it. Recognizing your emotions and being able to name them are the most important steps (especially for children). In this psycho educational creative group, children came together to use the emotion wheel to understand how many different ways we can feel emotions and how they can present themselves in our bodies. Next, children related experiences to one another about times where they feld different emotions and finally. created a home for a new pet that was filled with items to bring the pet comfort. Each home and item range was unique based on the child creating. The children talked amongst themselves about why their new pet needed each item weaving a beautiful narrative filled with emotion as they worked.
